Chapter Eleven

Gary’s private jet touched down at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. Jules was still in the dark about Rick’s incarceration. She was happy to be back in Africa, and all Gary told her was that all charges against her would be dropped once Gary paid some sort of fine. Wiring that kind of money would get the attention of the IRS, SEC, and other government busybodies. So, Gary had flown to Grand Cayman, where he kept an offshore account, and withdrawn $200,000 in big bills to take care of Rick and the scheme Possum was cooking up against Colin Mulenga.

At the airport in Zambia, he and Clay the pilot checked in with customs and immigration and paid off the agent to let Chief in without the proper veterinary paperwork. Once they were cleared, they all climbed into a car Gary had prearranged to pick them up.

Everything in Africa was run by money. Even checking in with immigration. Gary had placed a hundred-dollar bill inside of Jules’s passport. The agent opened it up, slid the Benjamin in his pocket, and stamped the passport. Gary didn’t wanna take any chances of Jules being flagged and possibly arrested, since he hadn’t made the payment to the judge yet.

It had been four days since Rick was sent to prison. Every day seemed like a year to Rick. He had to hold on and pray that Gary would get to the judge before someone got to him inside the prison.

That morning, the prison librarian rolled his cart up to Rick’s cell. Sitting on top was Don Quixote. Rick took the book and nodded at the librarian as he slid a pack of cigarettes to him.

Back on his bunk, he opened the hollowed-out book. Inside was a beauty of a shank. It was made from a plastic ladle and sharpened to a fine point on both sides. Rick hoped he wouldn’t have to use it but was thrilled to have it. He tucked it into his waistband and stepped into the yard.

As usual, a couple of inmates sized him up. He did what he always did. Took his fighting stance and waved them over. He had already been in ten fights on the inside. His face looked like a warzone, but it was better than the other guys. Rick had bested them all. None had weapons so far, and he hoped that trend would continue.

At lunchtime, he and Zebra made their way to the mess hall. As much as Rick hated the food, he fought his way through it because he couldn’t take a chance of getting sick or weak. The cuisine was exceptional that day. Some sort of stew, but it was green. Rick thought maybe they used iguanas for the meat. He started to take a bite when he was hit in the back of the head by a biscuit. He spun around and saw it was Chiumbo.

“Where’s my cigs!?” yelled Chiumbo.

Rick stood up and turned toward him. He had gotten a message to Possum to bring four cartons, but he hadn’t arrived yet.
